You feel it immediately when you visit the Achterhoek: history was made here. Stories were born here. If you like stories, you should visit Dinxperlo and Aalten. Due in part to their proximity to the German border, these towns in the municipality of Aalten have a slightly different tale to tell.
The stories about going into hiding are extraordinary. During the war, 20% of the population of Aalten was in hiding. This package consists of two cycle routes which take you along various hideouts, each with its own story to tell. You cycle from your accommodation of choice to the Hideout Routes, which lead you through the beautiful bocage in the area. Along the way, you will pass original hideouts and WWII monuments.
The route includes a stop at the National Hideout Museum, where you can learn more about Aalten’s important role during the resistance. After your visit, head to Theetuin Rensink for a delicious Achterhoek meal before continuing your route to the border town of Dinxperlo, for a visit to the Grenslandmuseum (border country museum). Here you will learn all about life along the border and the tumultuous smuggling history of this place which has grown together with Germany. After your visit, you can follow the route back to your accommodation.
The package offers (per person):
