The monument in Otterlo commemorates the battle between the Canadian 5th Armoured Division and the German occupier that took place on 15, 16 and 17 April 1945. The battle costs the lives of sixteen Canadian soldiers and four inhabitants of Otterlo. It was the last major battle on Dutch soil before the liberation of 5 May 1945.
